10 REASONS PEOPLE WATCH THE ANNOYING ORANGE VIDEOS

Why do millions of people watch the Annoying Orange Videos? The series began in October 2009 and it is still alive and kicking with nearly 40 million viewers to date on the first video. There are several reasons why so many people have taken the time to view, laugh at, and get annoyed by, this special orange. Here are 10 reasons why.
  1. That orange really is annoying. It might seem like an obvious point, but the series is aptly named. The orange on the counter with the eyes and mouth has a high-pitched voice that is unpleasant to the ears. To make matters worse it has an irritating laugh and it simply won’t shut up, right to the last second of the video.
  2. It’s so stupid it’s funny. The jokes are lame and some of them don’t make any sense. Honestly, it’s an orange talking, so why should it make sense? They use bad puns and the orange makes foolish assumptions that even a small child knows are wrong. For example, when the orange is bothering the pumpkin, he states that the pumpkin must be a big orange because of his color, and insists that he could be his “big brother.”
  3. The element of danger. The setting is in a kitchen where all kind of foods get sliced, diced and cooked. The other foods arrive only to be tortured by a small, annoying, citrus fruit on the opposite counter before their sudden demise. Of course the orange offers a two second warning (e.g. “Hay apple… knife”) before the screaming starts, as the already victimized foods become meals. It makes such an ordinary thing like slicing an apple seem like a horrific act, and it makes us laugh because it’s a ridiculous idea.
  4. Familiarity. We all know the characters, so it is easy to dive right into the story. Orange, apple, pumpkin, cheese, grapefruit, bananas, and other foods have made appearances and it is interesting to see how they are given personalities. We all have a mental reference to these things, and the twist is refreshing. Not to mention the Mario and Pac-Man episodes, which bring in classic video game characters that we all know and love.
  5. It’s an escape from reality. Many people use funny YouTube videos to unwind. Stress at school or work is more than enough reason for some to tune into that annoying orange. Life can also get mundane, depressing, and overly busy. These videos can help you forget about reality for a few minutes and laugh a little.
  6. Our friends watch. In most cases, people watch things because they heard about it from a friend or family member. There are so many easy ways to share things online these days, so it is easy for a series of funny videos like this to go viral. You can email, blog, post on Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and other social networks about what you see, and before you know it friends tell their friends and soon it seems like everyone you know has seen it.
  7. Light humor is always refreshing. Unlike Family Guy or the Simpsons, these videos are not satirical and don’t have any heavy or insulting jokes that people can seriously take offense to. If you really want to read more into what the creators intended, then perhaps you need to lighten up. Overall, the idea is to simply make people laugh without making political statements or making people think too much to get the jokes. It is all lighthearted and simple enough for kids to enjoy along with you.
  8. Curiosity. A lot of people have read tweets about the videos, scrolled through YouTube and saw the title, or heard someone talking about the “Annoying Orange.” The simple title simply spurs curiosity and some people just have to find out what everyone is talking about. After they watch the first one, they become even more curious about whom the orange will annoy next, and therefore watch the other videos.
  9. We have nothing better to do. Let’s face it; some people simply have no lives. Granted, that doesn’t mean that only people who have no lives watch the Annoying Orange, but some viewers probably don’t have anything better to do. If you can’t sleep and you are in a bad mood, it’s 2:30 am, and you’re online. Why not watch it?
  10. It’s awesome.” When asked why they watch, several people just say, “it’s awesome.” The only real way to find out if you agree or disagree with that is to watch the videos yourself. This is a highly subjective declaration, but many people seem to agree with this statement.
That is why so many people tune in to watch the many Annoying Orange videos. It’s good clean fun for the whole family.

19 Pinoy seamen freed by pirates return home

MANILA, Philippines – Nineteen Filipino seamen who were recently freed by Somali pirates after being held captive for 7 months are back home.
The Filipinos were crewmembers of the Greek bulk carrier MV Eleni P, which was headed to China from Ukraine when it was seized in Oman by Somali pirates last May.
Some of the victims said they were hurt by their kidnappers during their ordeal.
The overseas Filipino workers were made to undergo stress debriefing upon their return to Manila.
Despite the incident, they said they are willing to go back to their work as seafarers to support their families.
Piracy off the waters of Somalia remains the biggest threat to international shipping as armed men hold sailors and their ship hostage for ransom. – Report by Israel Malasa, ABS-CBN News; ANC

Webb family criticizes SC spokesman

abs-cbnNEWS.com

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The Webb family has criticized Supreme Court spokesman Jose Midas Marquez for allegedly expressing a “personal opinion” on the acquittal of the respondents in the Vizconde massacre case.
“We deplore the latest statement of the SC spokesperson, Atty. Midas Marquez, that ‘the acquittal of Webb, et al did not mean they were innocent of the charges,’” the Webb family said in a statement released to the media.
“This personal opinion of the SC spokesperson is uncalled for,” the family added.
Voting 7-4-4, the high court on Tuesday acquitted the main respondents in the Vizconde massacre case due to the failure of the prosecution to prove their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.
The respondents include Hubert Webb. All were incarcerated for more than 15 years.
Prompted to explain the decision further, Marquez told reporters the following day that “the magistrates did not say they were innocent and that they did not commit the crime.”
The Webb family said it is not “his place to interpret the decision of the Supreme Court.  The Decision speaks for itself.”
The family also stressed that the decision already categorically stated that Jessica Alfaro, the sole eyewitness for the prosecution, “was not a credible and trustworthy witness and her testimony was not worth of belief.”
The decision also highlighted the certifications issued by the US and the Philippine governments that Hubert was in the US between March 1991 and October 1992, they noted. The bodies of Estrellita Vizconde and daughters Carmela and Jennifer were found in the morning of June 30, 1991.
“If Jessica is a bogus eyewitness, and the U.S. and Philippine Government Certifications are true, then the inevitable conclusion is that Hubert could not have committed the crime,” the family added.
Marquez should “know that there is no need for the magistrates to say that Hubert and his co-Accused are innocent. Because of the presumption of innocence, Hubert and his co-accused are innocent unless proven otherwise, and there is no need for them to be declared such,” the family stressed.
Jurisprudence dictate that allowing the accused to go free does not mean he or she has not committed the offense, lawyers said.
In the People versus Coderes case in October 2003, the SC said: “In an acquittal, an accused is set free not necessarily because he did not commit the offense but, more likely than not, because the exacting proof for conviction may not have been met.”
It further stated: “A person is presumed innocent of a crime unless his guilt has been proven beyond any reasonable doubt. Thus, an acquittal does not always mean that the defense evidence is given full credence, but, rather that the prosecution has failed to overcome the presumption of innocence.”

15 dead in Philippines Hotel Fire

MANILA (AFP) - – Fifteen people were killed when a fire engulfed a hotel and a shop in the northern Philippines, police said.
Investigators on Sunday pulled 11 bodies from the shell of the five-storey hotel, named Bed and Breakfast, in Tuguegarao city after battling the blaze for four hours, city police chief Superintendent Pedro Martinez told reporters.
A couple and their two children who lived above a motorcycle parts store beside the hotel were also killed in the fire, he added.
The dead included nine recent graduates of a nursing school, all male, who had checked into the hotel ahead of taking professional exams, Martinez said.
Twelve other injured people were taken to hospital, where all were in a stable condition Sunday. Police did not release the identities of the missing and injured.
"According to the fire investigator, the fire started in the other building, not the hotel," Martinez said. The blaze apparently started in the shop's stock room, he added.
